Cyber Security jobs for 2019
If you believe that cyber-security is a dying field, think
again. The US Department of Labor reports a shortage of 219,000 cyber-security
trained personnel exists in 2019.
Marriott Hotels revealed last week one of the biggest
breaches of Cyber-Security
occurred at their hotel chain. This data security breach is believed to be one
of the biggest in history. Five hundred
million accounts were hacked. The hacks
included personal information from guests staying at: Marriott, Starwood, Sheraton,
St. Regis, and Westin Hotels. Personal
credit card information, email addresses, telephone numbers and employment data
were part of the theft.
Five attorney generals in the United States announced they
will be launching separate state investigations. The Federal Bureau of Investigation announced
on December 3 that it was also investigating the hack. The key take away from
this information is that massive regulation is coming. This regulation will require that
organizations that handle public information must prove to the government that
they are spending a percentage of their revenue for cyber-security. This revenue will be to implement procedures
and personnel who will protect the public against breaches like the one
described above. A spokesperson for the FBI stated that something needed to be
done. The spokesperson went on to say, the public doesn’t feel safe when cyber
breaches like the one at Marriott occur on a regular basis.
The next question our readers want to know is the skills,
which are required for a career in cyber security. The following skills will be briefly listed
and explained.
- The ability to repair a computer when damaged by a cyber-attack. This skill is acquired with the CompTIA A+, which is a vendor neutral certification. The A+ teaches its holder to repair and install protections against viruses and cyber-attacks.
- The CompTIA Network +, which provides the skills to install, configure and back up a corporate server. The network + is also a vendor neutral certification.
- CompTIA Security +, which teaches the skills to harden devices so it becomes difficult to attack them.
- Cisco’s Certified Network Associate, which provides the skills to configure, install, back up and install firewalls on commercial routers. The router is a primary source of attack. Holders of Cisco’s certification also learn how to protect WIFI installations against cyber-attacks.
- The certified Ethical Hacker. This certification provides its holder with the skills and ability to use 603 different penetration and testing tools for cyber-security. This certification teaches the holder to think like a hacker. If you can think like your enemy, you have a stronger chance of defeating that enemy.
- The final certification for cyber-security is CompTIA Linux+, which teaches the fundamentals of the Linux operating system. Linux is an open-source operating system used by many companies running on the back end. Linux makes it difficult for hackers to attack because of the operating system’s different flavors. The Linux certification teaches holders how to work with Redhat, Ubuntu, Fedora and Kali.
